By Anne

Are you moving to a new house and is it time to pack? In all the hustle and bustle, you may not have thought about how you are going to move your clothes. Oops! We understand that this was not at the top of your list: there are more important things to arrange first, of course. We are happy to save you some of your precious time with some tips on the best way to move your clothes. Read on to discover it!

Packing your clothes for the move can be stressful. After all, you don't want to lose any of your clothes during the move or to have to spend a lot of time unpacking on arrival. In addition, the clothing must remain dust and wrinkle-free so that you can wear them again immediately. You can of course fold the clothes neatly and store them in a box: that option is obvious. But this does mean that you will soon have to iron all your clothes that are prone to wrinkling. That is why in this blog we would like to give you some tips on how best to move your clothes so that you can wear them immediately afterwards.

Proper preparation for moving your clothes

The right amount of preparation will give you a lot of peace of mind. This way you know for sure that you haven't forgotten anything and you don't have to do any extra work after unpacking your clothes.

Step 1: Sort your clothes

Make sure you know what clothes you have. Decide which ones you want to take with you and which ones can be sold, donated or thrown away. Then you can sort the clothes by type.

Step 2: Fold your clothes into neat piles

This tip is intended for when you are going to use regular moving boxes. Folded clothes take up less space. It is also easier to find a particular item of clothing within a pile than within a confused heap. You put all the T-shirts in one step and fold them. Then you collect all your jeans and do the same, et cetera. Make sure you put heavy clothes under the light clothes so as not to 'crush' the light clothes. In the end you have all formed neat piles.

Step 3: Which clothes can wait?

Do you know in advance that you will be busy after the move? Then you can prioritize unpacking the clothes you need again quickly. If you move in the summer, for example, you will not immediately need your thick coats and winter sweaters. You can therefore put clothing that you do not need immediately at the bottom of the boxes. Or you store them in separate boxes and only unpack them later.

Step 4: Mark the moving boxes

If you use cardboard moving boxes, you can't see what's inside without opening them. Therefore, use a marker to write on which clothes are in which box. This will save you a lot of trouble if you plan to use the above tip.

Step 5: Load clothes correctly in the van

When you use cardboard boxes, you have to take into account that they are vulnerable. You should therefore make sure that you do not place heavy boxes or objects on top of this. Therefore, put the boxes with your clothes on top.

Different ways to move clothes

How you move your clothes depends on the clothes you have. If you have a lot of clothes that wrinkle easily, such as women's blouses or men's shirts, then you will want to be careful. Does your wardrobe consist mainly of jeans and cotton shirts? In that case, it mainly matters that they remain dust-free and you have to take fewer measures to prevent creases.

1: Moving clothes using cardboard or plastic moving boxes

As we said in the introduction, this tip is of course very obvious. Still, it's a great way to safely store your clothes. Make neat piles of your clothes and make sure you fill the box to the brim, otherwise the clothes will slide. Do you have an empty box? Then make sure you fill it with, for example, bubble wrap to prevent this from happening. Extra handy: it is best to use plastic containers instead of cardboard boxes. This way you are fully assured that your clothes will remain dry and clean. It is also easy when unpacking to see which clothes are in which box.

2: Move clothes without creases with wardrobe boxes

Maybe you only have a few pieces of clothing that you want to keep from wrinkling during the move, or a lot of them. Either way, if you're reading this tip, you'll probably want to move your clothes without wrinkling them. Fortunately, there is a solution: moving boxes for clothes. These wardrobe boxes are actually a kind of mini wardrobe where you can hang your clothes. There is a built-in bar so you can just use clothes hangers as you are used to. To ensure that the clothing is free of moisture and dust, it is best to protect it with the help of vacuum bags. These are also always handy to have around the house for storing seasonal clothing.

3: Move clothes without creases using garbage bags

Using garbage bags for moving your clothes is something you may not immediately think of. Still, it's an excellent, easy and inexpensive way to move your clothes without wrinkling or getting them dusty. To start, make sure you buy extra-large and sturdy garbage bags. This way you know for sure that there are no holes in it and that they stay closed properly. What do you do with the garbage bags? You use these to tie the clothes together. While your clothes are hanging on the hangers in the closet, slide them close together. Then you pull a garbage bag around the clothes and tie the drawstrings around the clothes hangers. You put this on and voila! Your clothes remain dust and wrinkle-free. Moreover, you can easily load them into the moving van, including the hangers. When you arrive at your new home, unloading and hanging your clothes in the new wardrobe is done in no time. You only have to remove the garbage bags.

4: Moving accessories

If you have a lot of accessories, you want to be sure that you can move them all with you. You don't want to find out that you lost your favorite bracelet, bag, belt or scarf during the moving process. That would be a waste! How do you ensure that you get all your accessories moved? And without everything tangling with each other?

4.1: Packing and moving jewelry

To begin with, it is best to keep jewelry separate by type. Small pieces of jewelry that cannot be tangled together, such as shape-retaining bracelets and cufflinks, can be stored together in Ziplock bags. To keep your earrings neatly together, you can poke them through a piece of cardboard and close them at the back. Necklaces are easy to store using toilet rolls or drinking straws: you thread them through and close the closure.

4.2: Moving and packing bags, scarves and other accessories

You can conveniently combine packing your bags and backpacks with that of other accessories. Namely by neatly folding your accessories and putting them in the bags and/or backpacks! That way you don't lose them and you also save space. Many bags such as handbags cannot be crushed anyway. You can easily store all kinds of accessories such as scarves, hats, caps, ties and belts. Don't have that many bags? Then you can always use moving tip number 1 to pack the rest.
