Finally! Gone are the days when you felt like an odd duck because you loved to rummage around the baby clothes in stores when you didn't even have a baby. A little sprout is on its way or maybe your little one is already here and now you are curious about how to buy the best baby clothes. No worries! We've got you covered. Read our five best tips when buying baby clothes.

When you are putting together or expanding your baby's wardrobe, you can run into some questions. What do you really need to have at home for a baby? Which sizes should you buy? What substances cause a sensitive skin? Baby clothes are sweet, but they can also be a puzzle. However, with the tips below you are well on your way to purchasing the right clothing for your little one.

Tip 1: Determine what you need

A baby wardrobe should consist of different items of clothing so that your baby is prepared for any situation. What are these and how many do you need exactly? We list it for you:

Six rompers

Baby clothes are not only sweet but also always have a practical design. Rompers ensure that your baby cannot lose heat through the belly or back and you can easily change the diaper via the press studs at the bottom.

Six pants

Especially with a newborn baby, it is best to choose pants with a soft fabric. This is because babies have fragile skin. Try not to think in terms of individual items of clothing, but make sets in which the pants ideally fit several shirts. Shirts get dirty faster and will therefore have to be replaced more often. The last thing you want is to have to replace the pants every time.

Six to nine shirts

A nice outfit is of course not complete without a nice shirt or sweater. Whether you go for a shirt with long or short sleeves or a sweater depends on the temperature. T-shirts and sweaters get dirty faster than pants, especially if your baby often returns milk. It is therefore certainly not a luxury to have a few more shirts and sweaters.

Six pajamas

Babies sleep a lot. Nice pajamas are therefore indispensable for your little one, especially because they are also very comfortable. The stretchy material is nice to sleep in, but also to play in.

Four to six pairs of socks

Cute mini baby socks will keep your baby's feet warm. For a newborn, you will need baby socks in size 10-12, or 0-3 months. However, don't bring too much of it into your home. This is a popular baby shower gift so chances are you'll be getting some already.

Two hats

They are super cute and are multifunctional: baby hats. Like adults, babies lose a lot of heat through their heads. Your baby needs a hat, especially during the first week. So don't buy too many, because you won't need them for very long.

Anti-scratch mitts

Baby nails may be small, but they are also sharp. So prevent your baby from scratching itself with these mittens that should not be missing in the baby wardrobe.

Soft shoes

Is your little one starting to crawl and walk? Then soft shoes are very useful! But you can also use them for that. Especially in colder weather they keep the feet nice and warm in the car or pram.

Jacket/cardigan

With a nice jacket or cardigan you give your baby extra warmth. A newborn baby can't regulate its temperature very well yet. That is why it is important that your baby is dressed warmly. Especially in winter and autumn, but don't forget that summer evenings can also get chilly.

Tip 2: How do you choose the right fabrics?

It is also important for a baby that clothing is comfortable. Babies like to move, even if they can't walk yet, so choose stretch fabrics. This way you don't restrict the freedom of movement. Make sure that the elastic is not too tight (especially at the abdomen, wrists and ankles). Avoid stiff, stiff fabrics that impede the movement of arms and legs. Also make sure that the clothing is suitable for sensitive skin. Therefore, choose soft, non-irritating materials. Also avoid clothing decorations such as glitter, stones and sequins to avoid a choking hazard.

Tip 3: How do you choose the right size?

To avoid having an excess of baby clothes at home, it is important to stick to the numbers from tip #1. Also, don't choose too many specific summer or winter pieces. In terms of sizes, start your baby wardrobe with clothes in the smallest sizes (size 50, 56 and 62). The standard baby clothes start at size 50. For premature babies, there are also clothes in sizes 44 and 48. Then complete the wardrobe over time. Also note that baby clothes are often given as gifts. So keep a close eye on how many clothes you have and in what size. That way you keep it clear. Here is a handy table that can help you choose the right size:

  • 0 to 2 months: size 50/56
  • 3 to 6 months: size 62/68
  • 9 months to 1 year: size 74/80
  • 5 years to 2 years: size 86/92

Tip 4: Easy to put on and take off

You will often have to put on and take off baby clothes. An accident with food or drink can happen quickly! To avoid accidentally hurting your baby, it is therefore better to choose clothes that are easy to put on and take off. This will also make your life a lot easier! Clothes with snaps or zippers are more practical than clothes that you have to pull over the baby's head. So it's better to go for cardigans instead of sweaters. And forget the complicated buttons: trousers with an elastic waistband are ideal. Baby dresses in combination with tights also work perfectly. Also make sure that the pants can be easily detached so that you can easily change the diaper.

Tip 5: Easy to wash

A baby means a lot of laundry. Therefore, go for clothes that can easily be washed with the washing machine at 30 or 40 degrees. This way you run less risk of the fabric shrinking or becoming unsightly during washing and at the same time you save on costs for dry cleaning or the higher temperatures of washing programs. Finally, we would like to give you the tip to buy clothes in the same color shades as much as possible. This way everything can be washed at the same time, without having to worry that the colors will run off.
