Tips for your job interview: what can you wear as a woman?

By Marloes

Yes, you have been selected for a job interview after you applied for a great position! But then the stress hits: what are you going to wear to leave a good first impression?

The first impression is often the most important one when you have a job interview. Of course you want the company you applied for to see that you are a great fit for the organization. What do you wear to a job interview? We have a few tips for you so you can increase your chances of getting that awesome job.

Check what your potentially future colleagues are wearing

This tip is easier for some than others, but we want to share it with you regardless. When you want to know what your future colleagues are wearing, you can check it both online and offline. Are you planning on working in a physical store? Visit it sometime and note what the current employees are wearing. Do they wear their own clothing with the company clothing? Or perhaps it is a clothing store and they are wearing the clothes that are sold there. Adjust your outfit to match it and show up in style.

Have you applied for an office job instead? Then try to look up the company on LinkedIn and find out what the current employees are wearing in their profile pictures. Most LinkedIn users have their profile picture set to public, so that would give you the opportunity to see what their outfits are. Does the company have their own website with the employees on display? In that case you can check the photos on there to see what the employees are wearing or what style they have. Obviously the pictures on the website have been published with the company’s permission, which is a guarantee that the outfits worn are acceptable.

Don’t stray too far away from your own style

We totally get it: you want to look professional, like someone who takes their tasks very seriously and represent the company. However, we recommend not giving up your own style. Ask yourself if it is realistic to wear the same type of outfits that you wear to this job interview. Would you feel comfortable doing so, or would you rather go for something that suits you better? You probably prefer to wear a combination of your own style that looks proper. And above all: comfortable. Don’t splurge on a brand new outfit just to wear it once, but instead choose to go for a tidy outfit that fits your own style. If you feel comfortable in your outfit, you automatically show more confidence during the job interview.

Do you have a blouse in your wardrobe that you can combine with a proper looking jeans? Create that outfit or something similar. Choose a pair of neutral sneakers or ankle boots that are clean and there you are, ready to rock that job interview!

Keep the jewelry modest

Unless you are applying to work in a fashion store or jewelry shop, we recommend not wearing too many accessories. Two necklaces is fine, but ten rings would be overdoing it. It can not only distract the person interviewing you, but also distract you. If you happen to fidget with your jewelry while you are nervous, we recommend to keep the amount of rings as low as possible. Only wear jewelry that gives you confidence or truly match your outfit and keep the rest safely at home.
