Stinky shoes and sweaty feet? Here's how to fix it!

By Anne

Afraid to take off your shoes after a long day for fear of the smelly consequences? Does your friend, boyfriend or roommate keep throwing your shoes out of the room into the hallway or balcony? Don't you dare change your clothes at the gym because you have to take off your smelly sneakers? Then read on, because we have the solutions!

Preferably wear leather shoes

Because leather shoes breathe the sweat from your feet won’t get stuck inside your shoes. Instead, your feet will have better ventilation. This reduces the risk of wet socks and accumulated sweat in your shoes and (unlike shoes made of, for example, synthetic materials) reduces the smell of your shoes.

Coffee pods in your shoes

It may sound a little strange, but an unused coffee pod in your shoe draws the moisture and stench out of your shoes. Switched to cups, but still have some pads lying around? Don't throw them away! Place an unused coffee pad in both shoes and leave it overnight. Remove the pads the following morning and ready to use! If necessary, you can repeat this for several nights.

Vinegar cloth in your shoes

Vinegar is not exactly associated with the most pleasant smell but for many household inconveniences, this is the product to use! How it works? Mix a few tablespoons of vinegar with a cup of water in a bowl. Slightly moisten two clean wipes with the mixture, put the damp cloths in your shoes and leave them overnight. In the morning, remove the cloths and let the shoes air out for a while. You’ll be all set to get back on the road!

Baking soda in your shoes

Baking soda may not be the first thing that comes to mind, but it is effective because it not only absorbs moisture but also foul odors. Sprinkle a good amount of soda in your shoes or boots and leave it for a few hours to a day. Afterwards, shake everything out and your shoes will smell fresh again.

Your shoes in the freezer

The freezer is a practical appliance indeed, as it can also offer a solution when it comes to smelly shoes. Because the stench is caused by certain bacteria, killing these bacteria is the key to success. And bacteria don't just die at extremely high temperatures, but also at extremely low ones. Put your shoes in a plastic sealed bag and put them in the freezer. Leave them there overnight, and the next morning your shoes will smell fresh again. By the way, wait a little while before wearing them to avoid cold feet.

Using shoe deodorant

The use of shoe deodorant often helps against bad odors. Combine it with one of the previous tips for a minty-fresh result. Using shoe deodorant also prevents your shoes from smelling again for a while.

Brushing your shoes

Polishing your shoes also helps against unpleasant odors, especially from the outside. Went for a night of drinking and now your shoes are all sticky? Use a wet towel when you get out of the shower in the morning to clean your shoes. This works well and is also eco-friendly, because the towel will get washed anyway.
