How to wash baby clothes?

By Anne

The baby's room is finished and the closet is full of cute baby clothes. Once the little one has arrived, however, it won't be long before you have to start washing the baby clothes. After all, little accidents happen easily! But what should you pay attention to when washing baby clothes?

Why should you treat baby clothes differently with cleaning than your own clothes, you may think. Baby skin is still very delicate and needs to get used to wearing clothes. This means that baby clothes should be washed with more care to ensure that as little bacteria as possible remains and the fabric stays nice and soft. We like to share our tips, so be sure to read on when you want to wash your boys baby clothes and girls baby clothes in the best possible way.

Baby clothes: washing before use

It is very important to wash baby clothes before your baby wears them for the first time. This is because new clothes contain substances that may irritate your baby's delicate skin. Most baby clothes are made of soft fabrics such as cotton. Many pesticides and chemicals are used in growing and processing these fabrics into clothes. Therefore, harmful substances such as formaldehyde can be left in baby clothes. You can't see or smell this chemical and it keeps new clothes wrinkle-free. But even used or exchanged baby clothes can contain traces that irritate your baby's skin. It is therefore necessary to wash your new, used or exchanged baby clothes thoroughly once.

Which detergents?

When a baby is still in the womb, the skin is not yet exposed to anything. Therefore, a newborn baby has very sensitive skin that is easily irritated. It is therefore advisable to get the right clothing fabrics, but also to consider the type of detergent you use. Preferably choose a mild and hypoallergenic detergent without perfume. This is because your child can also react to perfumes. Do you really want a fresh scent in your laundry? Then go for a natural variant.

Of course, you also have to be careful with fabric softener. Fabric softener is also full of fragrances and dyes that can irritate. The advice is therefore not to use fabric softener. A tip from the category of grandmother knows best: put a small splash of white vinegar (not cleaning vinegar) in the fabric softener container. This will rinse all soap residue out of the laundry.

Finally, also be careful with stain removers. A stubborn, dirty stain develops quickly: milk returned, feces, orange carrot porridge. It is tempting in such cases to reach for a stain remover, however, it is better not to do so. This is because most of them contain many chemicals that are bad for your baby’ health.

Washing together

Fortunately, washing baby clothes doesn't mean it has to be a lot of extra work. You can simply throw the clothes in the washing machine with your own laundry. Baby clothes that need to be washed hot can be washed with the bedding. Just like with your own laundry, sort by color. After all, you don't want the white onesie to suddenly turn pink! Usually you sort white, colored and dark laundry separately, but some colors have their own instructions if you really want to do it right. Red, for example, is very dangerous; especially if you wash it together with lighter clothes. Yellow also tends to fade quickly when washed together with red and blue, so it is better to wash it with the light laundry.

Ironing baby clothes

Do you really want to make sure that all bacteria are killed? Then choose to iron the baby clothes hot before putting them back in the closet. To keep the baby clothes beautiful, iron them inside out. Check the care label to see the maximum ironing temperature. It is also best to iron hydrophilic towels, sheets and towels.
