Why does Nike no longer make Air Max 1?

By Patrick

Nike Air Max 1 was one of the most popular shoes in the world. You probably owned a pair at some point in time. But, buying a new pair is unfortunately not so easy. Why does Nike no longer make the Air Max 1? There is a special strategy behind it, which we would like to explain to you.

The fact is that Nike stopped (regular) production of the shoes has nothing to do with the demand for the model. The shoes are still very popular. Nevertheless, Nike very consciously chose to stop production. At least with regular production. Occasionally, special models become available, which are then sold out at lightning speed.

The Nike Air Max 1

Nike's Air Max 1 is of course a beautiful, comfortable sneaker and has also become a status symbol and a cult thing. These elements combined make the shoe incredibly popular with a large audience. It is a cool shoe to look at, which also runs very well thanks to the air unit on the outside.  Especially the marketing around Nike's Air Max 1 has been great over the years. That effect is only magnified now because the shoes are so limited in availability.

Nike has chosen to focus on other shoes. That means that the collection is no longer being expanded. And indeed, that the original shoes will no longer be made either. That's good news for collectors with a copy, but bad news for anyone who would still like to buy the shoes.

New Air Max 1 models from Nike

So does Nike no longer make models of the Air Max 1 at all? That's not quite the case either, although unfortunately you can no longer order the regular shoes. However, you do have the opportunity to order special models from time to time. Some of the shoes Nike has already made, others seem to be scheduled to come out. In that respect, there are still plenty to collect:

  • Nike Air Max 1 ECO - By You
  • Concepts X Nike Air Max 1 'Far Out'
  • Nike Air Max 1 'Cobbelstone' - Safari
  • Nike Air Max 1 NH 'Threeline'
  • Nike Air Max 1 'Madder Root
  • Travis Scott X Nike Air Max 1 'Saturn Gold'
  • Travis Scott X Nike Air Max 1 'Barpque Brown'
  • Nike Air Max 1 'Photon Dust'

So are you looking for a pair of fine sneakers? Chances are slim that you'll choose Nike's Air Max 1 for that. Unless you still have a pair in your closet of course. The sneakers run nicely and look great, especially in the light colors and in white.

Will the shoe return?

Just because Nike no longer makes the Air Max 1 at this time doesn't mean you can never wear them again. There are indeed rumors that the brand will eventually resume production.  In that regard, it is worth keeping an eye on the developments surrounding the Nike Air Max 1. That way, you'll make sure you're on time when the shoes do become available again. After all, it remains the most popular sneaker Nike has made.
